La salut de l'aqüífer del Besòs
En un moment en què es parla molt de l'aigua, i en algun moment de l'aqüífer del Besòs, la revista científica internacional Environmental Geochemistry and Health en el seu número 30 (pàgines 273-289) del 2008 publica un interessant article:
Assessment of groundwater contamination caused by uncontrolled dumping in old gravel quarries in the Besòs aquifers (Barcelona, Spain)
Els autors del qual són n'Andrés Navarro i na Montserrat Carbonell, del Depto. M. Fluidos, ETSEIT, Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña.
Les dades corresponen als anys 2002 i 2003. Conclusions:
(...) The hydrogeochemical data indicate that many wells in the refilled and surrounding areas are contaminated and exceed European primary drinking water standards, which are as follows: 200 μg/l for Fe, 50 μg/l for Mn, 10 μg/l for Pb, 5 μg/l for Sb, 250 mg/l for chloride, 50 mg/l for nitrate and 250 mg/l for sulfate.(...).

The uncontrolled dumping of waste in the old gravel pits of the La Llagosta aquifer, which contain high proportions of Ba, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn, and the presence of mining waste impoundments in the nearby coastal range, which contain high proportions of As, Ba, Cu, Pb and Sb, may cause the contaminated soils above and surrounding the dumping sites. The mobilization of contaminants in groundwater from the refilled areas may be caused by vertical variations in piezometric levels, which lead to the “washing” of buried waste.(...)
