Juan Jose Ibarretxe, the Lehendakari (President) of the BAC-Basque Autonomous Community Government, met with six of the seven people indicted in the Egunkaria case at his headquarters yesterday. Txema Auzmendi, Xabier Oleaga, Martxelo Otamendi, Joan Mari Torrealdai, Iñaki Uria and Pello Zubiria spent about an hour with Ibarretxe. Miren Azkarate, the BAC Government's Spokesperson and Minister for Culture, was also present.
The people charged have been summonsed to appear before the Spanish National Criminal Court on December 3 to have their charges read out to them; this was why the Lehendakari was keen to express his support and solidarity with them yesterday. Joan Mari Torrealdai referred to this during a press briefing given after the meeting. On behalf of the indictees he "sincerely" thanked Ibarretxe for meeting with them at his headquarters and for listening to their concerns. "We are grateful to him for his warm reception, his approachability and for the support and solidarity he had shown towards us," he explained.
The Flemish and Walloon police are to help each other out thanks to a new deal between forces in the two regions, it was reported on Monday.
On Sunday, Dutch speaking officers from Coxyde, La Panne and Nieuwport helped their Francophone counterparts in Charleroi to police a football match between the Zebres and Club Bruges.
In exchange, Charleroi's police force has agreed to provide backup in Flanders next summer when the coast is busy with tourists, including many from Charleroi.
This new spirit of exchange will be spelled out in an agreement to be signed at Coxyde on Tuesday.
While working away, officers will be allowed to fill out their charge
sheets in their mother tongue.
After wellcoming last spring the arrival of Jo kergueris, a breton speaking Head at the Conseil General du Morbihan, and having recalled the need to put in place bilingual road signs (breton and french), the Breton Party can only rejoices itself at the Département decision to put in place the new road signs, with the help of the Office of Langue Bretonne.
By this decision, the Conseil General finally reacts to popular demands and to actions carried out by militants for the last 20 years! Now, Morbihan will be in position to catch up with the Cotes d'Armor and Finistére Départements.
The politician who reconvened the Scottish Parliament after almost 300 years has been gifted the desk she sat at during the historic ceremony.
The Scottish National Party's Winnie Ewing opened the first meeting in 1999.
The desk she sat behind became surplus to requirements when the parliament moved from The Mound to its new home.
The SNP president asked if she could have the piece of furniture and it now takes pride of place in the drawing room of her Moray home.
Presiding Officer George Reid said he agreed that it was an appropriate gesture to acknowledge Dr Ewing's place in history.
Reuters reports that a leading Catalan nationalist politician has hit out against Madrid's bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games after claiming the state has been trying to prevent the recognition of separate Catalan federations in international sports bodies.
Josep Lluis Carod Rovira, the leader of the left-wing Catalan nationalist party ERC said, "anyone who is incapable of organizing sport within their own state is totally incapable of holding the 2012 Olympics in its capital. It is incomprehensible that anyone from Catalunya can support this bid".
He made the remarks after the International Roller Sports Federation (FIRS) reversed a decision to allow the Catalan Federation to have separate representation from Spain, claiming that the Spanish government has put pressure on the FIRS to change its mind about the status of the Catalan Federation. The decision means that the Catalan team cannot now participate in the world championships where they could have ended up meeting the Spanish national team.
In the absence of any proof or evidence to show there was a link between the newspaper Egunkaria and ETA, each of the lawyers of the seven people charged in the summary proceedings relating to the closing down of the paper have filed appeals against the indictment to request that the examining judge drop the case. Lawyers representing Xabier Alegria, Txema Auzmendi, Xabier Oleaga, Martxelo Otamendi, Joan Mari Torrealdai, Iñaki Uria and Pello Zubiria have this week lodged a "reform" appeal with Juan Del Olmo, the judge in the 6th Examining Court of the Spanish National Criminal Court. The lawyer Iñigo Iruin presented the appeals on behalf of Otamendi, Oleaga and Alegria; Iñaki Esnaola presented Zubiria's; Carmen Lamarca Torrealdai's; Luis Pelaez, the one on behalf of Auzmendi; and Joxe Mari Elosua, Uria's. If the examining judge dismisses the appeals, the indictees will be able to file appeals with the Criminal Section.
The Scottish Parliament has resolved the issue of which flags to fly outside the new building in Edinburgh.
The Saltire, the Union and the European Union flags will fly at all times.
When the Queen visits the Royal Standard will be flown and a fifth flagpole will be erected when a foreign dignitary is at Holyrood.
The Scottish National Party described the new policy, which comes into effect on St Andrew's day, as "a victory for Scotland".
However, Nationalists also said the measures did not go far enough.
Bruce Crawford, SNP MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, said the Saltire should be the only flag permanently displayed.
"This is a small victory for Scotland. The Saltire is our national flag and it is only right that it should be flown every day," he said.

The chairman of Federación de Futbol Argentina (AFA), Julio Grondona, announced through Catalunya Ràdio broadcasting station, that the National Argentinian team will meet the Catalan one at Christmas, exactly on December 29, at Camp Nou (the play-field of Barcelona Futbol Club). On the Argentinian side, the match will be played by the main non-injured stars, some of which are presently, or were formerly, engaged by soccer clubs of the Catalan area, such as Riquelme (Vila-real), Aymar and Ayala (Valencia), or Saviola (Barça).
Every year since 1997 the Catalan National Team engages at Christmas in a friendly match with an international selection. Last year, after the match with Brazil, the Catalan team selector, Angel 'Pitxi' Alonso, disclosed that he would like to have Argentina, one of the best world soccer teams, as their next competitor.
Nationalists are seeking to block the sale of a house built on the site where Scots hero Rob Roy MacGregor was reputedly born.
Glengyle House, by the shores of Loch Katrine, is described by owner Scottish Water as "the jewel in the crown".
Scottish National Party MSP Richard Lochhead urged Environment Minister Ross Finnie to block the sale.
However, Scottish Water said the B-listed building has lain empty for years and is "a surplus asset".
The property is one of six due to go under the hammer through SVA Property Auctions at the Quality Central Hotel in Glasgow on 24 November.
In honour of Lisa Simpson taking up the Cornish cause and shouting 'rydhsys rag Kernow lemmyn' (Freedom for Cornwall now), Warlinenn is dedicating a page to the yellow-skinned girl from Springfield. This event will occur on Channel 4 on Christmas Day while the Queen of England is spouting on the BBC. I know what I would rather watch. Lisa deserves to be given an honoury bardship for her efforts. We will find out the full storyline very soon, and I hope we'll find it to our liking. Whatever happens, the publicity has already done amazing things for the Cornish culture.
Anders Eriksson, the chairman of the separatist Ålands Framtid (Åland's Future) party, is to be removed from the delegation that the semi-autonomous province has in the Nordic Council.
Åland, a group of islands situated between Sweden and mainland Finland, are a part of Finland, but enjoy wide-ranging autonomous powers.
At a session of the Nordic Council in Stockholm earlier this week, Eriksson expressed strong denunciations of Finland.Viveka Eriksson, the speaker of the Landsting, or Åland Parliament, and Roger Norlund, the head of the provincial government, took issue with his statements.
Now Åland's main parties, the Centre and the Liberals, want to drop Eriksson from the post of deputy representative of the Landsting at the Nordic Council. It has been proposed that Anders Eriksson should be replaced by Raija-Liisa Eklöw, whose mother tongue is Finnish - a minority language in the predominantly Swedish-speaking province.
Gaelic campaigners claim Scotland's native tongue should be given equal status with English in schools in a bid to ensure its survival.
MSPs were told the Gaelic Language Bill would not protect its future and urged to make it compulsory for councils to provide Gaelic language education.
Comann nam Pàrant, a Gaelic support body, told the Education Committee the bill had been "watered down".
The bill is to be become law across Scotland by next September.
Iain MacIllichiar, of Comann nam Pàrant, which helps parents with children in Gaelic education, said the language should be given equality within Scottish classrooms - something which the current bill does not include.
